World Color Survey

چکیده
The World Color Survey [WCS] was undertaken to investigate the main findings of Berlin and Kay [B&K] (1). These were (A) that there exist universal cross-linguistic constraints on color naming, and (B) that basic color terminology systems tend to develop in a partially fixed order. To this end, the WCS collected color-naming data from speakers of 110 unwritten languages. The WCS data are available at http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu /wcs/data.html. This article reviews the history of the WCS, including the creation of the online data archive, and describes some recent uses of the archive to investigate constraints on color naming across languages.

World Color Survey color naming reveals universal motifs and their within-language diversity.
We analyzed the color terms in the World Color Survey (WCS) (www.icsi.berkeley.edu/wcs/), a large color-naming database obtained from informants of mostly unwritten languages spoken in preindustrialized cultures that have had limited contact with modern, industrialized society. The color naming idiolects of 2,367 WCS informants fall into three to six "motifs," where each motif is a different co...
متن کاملUsing Statistics for Cross-linguistic Semantics: A Quantitative Investigation of the Typology of Colour Naming Systems
The paper presents a statistical evaluation of the typological data about color naming systems across the languages of the world that have been obtained by the World Color Survey. In a first step, we discuss a principal component analysis of the categorization data. This leads to a small set of easily interpretable features that are dominant in color categorization. These features were used for...
متن کاملThe color lexicon of American English.
This article describes color naming by 51 American English-speaking informants. A free-naming task produced 122 monolexemic color terms, with which informants named the 330 Munsell samples from the World Color Survey. Cluster analysis consolidated those terms into a glossary of 20 named color categories: the 11 Basic Color Term (BCT) categories of Berlin and Kay (1969, p. 2) plus nine nonbasic ...

The paper presents a statistical evaluation of the typological data about color naming systems across the languages of the world that have been obtained by the World Color Survey. In a first step, we discuss a singular value decomposition of the categorization data that led to a small set of easily interpretable features dominant in color categorization. These features were used for a dimension...
